Italian antique tree of life pot

£90.00

These pots originating from the southern Italian region of Calabria were made in the mid-late 1800s. The abstract tree of life motif signifies good fortune and longevity, designed with the hopes of a bountiful harvest bringing prosperity to the rural folk.

Originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies, sardines, figs or olives in olive oil, it would have been in use up until the 1950s-60s after which industrialised processes and mass-production overtook these more traditional methods of pottery making in southern Italy. Today, this charming piece would make an ideal vase or as a lovely decorative piece.
